How the Words of Faith Can Dismantle Mountains

“Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. "Nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17:20)

Mountains are awe-inspiring symbols of strength, grandeur, and permanence. When we experience personal challenges that seem immovable, it can be hard to believe they can come down. Whether these mountains are fear, doubt, financial struggles, broken relationships, or health issues, overcoming mountains can seem unbearable. But, Jesus teaches in the Gospel of Matthew that our faith as small as a mustard seed has the power to dismantle mountains.

The Transformative Power of Faith

Faith is more than a belief; it is a confident assurance in things unseen. It is an active trust in the ability of the work of God in our lives, no matter how dire the circumstances may be, and our faith speaks life into situations where there seems to be no hope, allowing us to visualize our victories before they come to life.

This is not about denying the existence of challenges. It is about acknowledging that the God who created the mountains is the same God who can move them. Having and exercising our faith shifts our focus from the magnitude of the problem to the magnitude of the power of God. This shift in perspective is the first step toward our breakthrough.

Speaking to Your Mountains

Notice that Jesus instructs us to speak to the mountains in our lives. Words of faith are not passive; they are active declarations of belief. When we express His promises over our circumstances, we align our thoughts, actions, and expectations with His will, and Scripture reinforces this power of words repeatedly:
  1. “If anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.” (Mark 11:23)
  2. “The tongue has the power of life and death…” (Proverbs 18:21)
  3. “Let the weak say, ‘I am strong.’” (Joel 3:10)
The words we speak frame the reality we step into because they are the act of spiritual authority - a proclamation that the truth and promises of God can override our earthly obstacles.

Faith in Action

However, words of faith are not a magic formula; when accompanied by action, they are powerful, and the Bible is replete with stories of individuals whose faith-inspired actions dismantled mountains:
  1. David spoke faith when he declared victory over Goliath and then acted by slinging the stone that brought the giant down (1 Samuel 17).
  2. The woman with the issue of blood spoke faith when she said, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed,” and then pushed through the crowd to reach Jesus (Mark 5:25-34).
  3. Noah spoke faith by warning of a flood and then demonstrated his belief by building the ark (Hebrews 11:7).
Faith requires us to step out in obedience and trust that God will meet us in our actions.

The Role of Community

Sometimes, the mountains in our lives feel too heavy to face alone. This is where the power of a faith-filled community comes in. Being around individuals who will speak life, pray with you, and remind you of the promises of God can strengthen your resolve. A community of believers can help multiply faith, as seen in the story of the paralytic whose friends lowered him through the roof to reach Jesus (Mark 2:1-12). Their collective faith resulted in his healing.

Start with the Mustard Seed

You do not need an overwhelming amount of faith to dismantle mountains. Jesus emphasizes the smallness of a mustard seed because the size of your faith does not matter. It is the power of the One in whom your faith exists. A mustard seed - small and unassuming holds the potential for tremendous growth. In the same way, the tiniest step of faith can set the stage for the transformative work of God.

A Call to Speak and Believe

What mountains are you facing today? Is it fear, doubt, or an external challenge? Start speaking to it with faith. Declare the promises of God over your situation, take a step forward, trust He is with you, and surround yourself with a community of believers who will join their faith with yours.

And remember: The same God who said, “Let there be light,” and saw the universe come into existence is the One who empowers you to speak to your mountains. With faith, nothing is impossible.
