“Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. "Nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17:20)
Mountains are awe-inspiring symbols of strength, grandeur, and permanence. When we experience personal challenges that seem immovable, it can be hard to believe they can come down. Whether these mountains are fear, doubt, financial struggles, broken relationships, or health issues, overcoming mountains can seem unbearable. But, Jesus teaches in the Gospel of Matthew that our faith as small as a mustard seed has the power to dismantle mountains.
The Transformative Power of Faith
Faith is more than a belief; it is a confident assurance in things unseen. It is an active trust in the ability of the work of God in our lives, no matter how dire the circumstances may be, and our faith speaks life into situations where there seems to be no hope, allowing us to visualize our victories before they come to life.
This is not about denying the existence of challenges. It is about acknowledging that the God who created the mountains is the same God who can move them. Having and exercising our faith shifts our focus from the magnitude of the problem to the magnitude of the power of God. This shift in perspective is the first step toward our breakthrough.
Speaking to Your Mountains
Notice that Jesus instructs us to speak to the mountains in our lives. Words of faith are not passive; they are active declarations of belief. When we express His promises over our circumstances, we align our thoughts, actions, and expectations with His will, and Scripture reinforces this power of words repeatedly:
- “If anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.” (Mark 11:23)
- “The tongue has the power of life and death…” (Proverbs 18:21)
- “Let the weak say, ‘I am strong.’” (Joel 3:10)
- David spoke faith when he declared victory over Goliath and then acted by slinging the stone that brought the giant down (1 Samuel 17).
- The woman with the issue of blood spoke faith when she said, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed,” and then pushed through the crowd to reach Jesus (Mark 5:25-34).
- Noah spoke faith by warning of a flood and then demonstrated his belief by building the ark (Hebrews 11:7).
