Empowering Diversity in Cybersecurity: Closing the Skills Gap for Women of Color

Cybersecurity is more critical than ever in protecting our data, privacy, and infrastructure from cyber threats - leading to a growing demand for cybersecurity professionals. However, this industry lacks diversity, particularly among Women of Color, and educating and empowering Women of Color with cybersecurity skills is essential in decreasing the cybersecurity skills gap and the evolving cyber threats facing our society. Following are a few strategies to close this gap and foster a more diverse and inclusive cybersecurity workforce. Recognizing the Disparity Women of Color remain vastly underrepresented in cybersecurity careers. They face systemic barriers and biases that hinder their participation and advancement in the field. Recent studies reveal that women make up a small percentage of the cybersecurity workforce, with Women of Color representing an even smaller fraction. This disparity deprives the industry of diverse perspectives and talents that perpetuate inequalities in o

The Dance Between the Offeror and Offeree

During my undergraduate studies, I interviewed for an administrative assistant position, and one of my favorite courses was Business Law. My professor was impressed with how I briefed my cases and encouraged me to attend Law School. After the interview, I was excited to receive a verbal offer for the administrative assistant position, which I accepted with a follow-up acknowledgment letter; however, my excitement diminished when I received a confirmation letter with a starting salary less than the original offer I had agreed to. My Business Law course was intricate in helping me understand the roles of an Offeror and an Offeree. Recognizing and understanding these roles is not just a matter of legal semantics; it's the foundation of strong, enforceable, and mutually beneficial agreements. When an Offeror submits an offer to an Offeree (e.g., services, products, or a partnership) verbally or contractually, the Offeree can accept, reject, or modify the conditions of the contrac

Bridging the Gap: Accelerating Workplace Equity for Women of Color

Women of Color continue to encounter challenges that hinder their advancement in the workplace despite significant strides toward gender equality and diversity in the workplace. These challenges derive from the intersection of gender and racial biases that can lead to career and income disparities. Addressing these issues requires systemic changes with targeted support for women of color. Persistent Challenges Underrepresentation in Leadership: The underrepresentation of Women of Color in executive positions across different business sectors reflects the systemic barriers that prevent their advancement. Pay Inequity: The gender pay gap is more pronounced for Women of Color, who often earn significantly less than their white male and female counterparts. This disparity reflects broader issues of inequality and discrimination in the workplace. Microaggressions and Bias: Women of color frequently encounter microaggressions and implicit biases that undermine their professional

What's Love Got to Do With it?

What's Love Got to Do With It was a song released in 1984 by Tina Turner. It was one of Tina Turner's greatest hits because it was the anthem of independence and self-empowerment, and it suggests that love is not enough to sustain healthy and fulfilling relationships. The song prioritizes self-respect, self-empowerment, and resilience over the fallacy of love. And it serves as a reminder that love is an intricate element of human connections; however, personal strength and self-advocacy are essential to achieving happiness and fulfillment. Even though love is often associated with personal relationships, it can contribute to heightened productivity, engagement, satisfaction, and success in business and workplace environments by driving passion, fostering positive relationships, enhancing job satisfaction, improving the customer experience, and shaping organizational culture. When individuals love what they do, they feel passionate and engaged in their work. This pas

Don't Shrink

Love is a powerful force that can infiltrate light in the darkness and melt the hardness of a cold heart. It is a force that is supposed to represent God's love on Earth through relationships. However, when people do not understand the purpose of love, they abuse it! They ask people to do things to prove their loyalty and love that is contrary to God's purpose and His love. On the other hand, when Jesus died on the Cross, He did so to express His unconditional love for humankind. He knew the shedding of His blood on the Cross would be the final time blood would have to be shed for our redemption from sin. Jesus did not shrink or go into hiding. On His journey, He would step away for restoration to continue his ministry and mission. But Jesus never went into hiding because He was clear about who He was, who He was serving, and why He was serving. Today, many women are in relationships where they have chosen to shrink instead of allowing their love to illuminate b

The Impact of Implicit Bias

Organizations that prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion can unlock the full potential of their workforce, access diverse markets, and cultivate a positive brand that will lead to ultimate growth and success. On the other hand, organizations that do not implement fair and unbiased processes to promote a culture of inclusivity will hinder their progress for business growth and credibility in the following ways: Hinder innovation, creativity, and problem-solving when their biases influence hiring decisions, promotions, and team creation and limit their ability to attract and retain diverse talents. Prevent equal opportunities for training programs and leadership roles based on subjective assumptions about individuals or groups outside a dominant culture that leads to hinged growth and potential of talented employees and limited contributions to the organization. Decrease employee morale and engagement when they feel undervalued, demotivated, and disengaged when they experience

Empowering women experiencing situational poverty is not only the ethical thing to do but is also crucial for the overall well-being of our society. True Beauty - Originated from YouVersion Bible App

Proverbs 31 is a well-known chapter in the Bible written by King Lemuel where he shares advice from his mother - a God-fearing, hard-working, generosity-driven woman when he was king. Proverbs 31:30 (KJV) states, “Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman that feareth the Lord shall be praised.” Deep within, we know this verse is true. No matter how charming or beautiful a woman is, we know beauty is temporal, charm is finite, and the aging process will run its course. King Lemuel does not mention the physical appearance of his mother; he focuses on her character - described as a woman who fears the Lord. If you know a woman who loves and respects God, honors and cares for people, invests wisely, and lives intentionally, take a moment to thank God for her life. As she aims to be more like God, strive to be more like her.

Live According to Truth

A student wanted to call his mother to tell her he was not having a good day. A teacher asked him why wasn't he having a good day, and he replied, "because nobody likes me." The teacher asked his permission to ask the class if they liked him, and he said, "no." This student has been operating from the belief that all the students at the school do not like him and that he does not fit in. The sad thing is he cannot provide solid proof to validate his feelings or assumptions. There are a large number of people living according to the fallacy of their feelings! Feelings are tricky! They seldom can be solidified without facts. However, people would rather live in captivity by holding onto their feelings instead of seeking divine truth that can release them from the lies intertwined in their feelings. We were created in the image of God to serve Him and to live a victorious, abundant life! But if we do not realize why God created us, we will shortchange ou

Faith is the Key to God's Promises

Realists seem to shun (i.e., people who tend to view or accept things as they are) people who live by faith. On the surface, realists and people who govern their lives by faith are different. But at their core, they are quite the same because they consciously and unconsciously live by faith. When realists work, they expect payment after completion of their project or workweek. That is unconscious faith because payment is expected, not guaranteed. Conscious faith is an unemployed person who is confident they will secure work with God's help. Faith is not magic; it is a process of life. We are not faithless beings. The question is, where do we direct our faith and the energy we release when we exercise it? Realists may not believe in a deity like God. Their lives are inspired by what they see. People who believe in God are led by what they cannot see because their hope and assurance are in God's ability to honor His promises! Click here to view journal pages for this blog
